Since Medellin is located in a valley, surrounded by mountains you can imagine it is difficult to get rid of all the air pollution. When the air pollution goes too bad in the area of Medellin in order to combat it, the city places strict bans on the use of private cars and what they do is license plates ending in an odd number get to drive their car on specific days of the week and the even numbers get to drive on the other days. This minimizes the number of cars that are out at a given day.
Another initiative that is being done is making the metro system free for a while so that way the citizens are more inclined to take the metro instead of driving their own cars. Sometimes the city closes down the airport in order to reduce the pollutants in the air as well.
The third initiative I want to touch upon is their bicycle program. In order to encourage people to use a bicycle instead of driving their own car or taking the bus, Medellin has made bicycles free and have at least 18 stations around the city to allow everyone to have a chance to use a bike.
