This website is used to spread awareness on the air pollution issue in Medellin, Colombia. The primary policy that is being implemented to combat this issue is known as Plan Integral de Gestión de la Calidad del Aire (PIGECA). This plan emphasizes educating the people of Medellin on reducing the amount of pollutants they create in order to decrease the overall amount of pollution added to the air and make the issue more manageable for future policies.
Medellin is the second most polluted area in Latin America, and the issue is likely to get worse in time without intervention. This policy is designed to drastically slow the increase in pollutants in the air in order to make the pollution issue more manageable for future plans.
This policy relates to ecologists and air quality engineer, this is due to the fact that ecologists have concerns with the birds that are ingesting the fumes that are in the air which could have an adverse effect to them. As for air quality engineers they monitor and try to modify pollution-control equipment. Air pollution affects many areas in the 4 key areas of sustainability. Not being able to breathe in clean air affects the wellbeing of the population as well as the wellbeing for the present and future generations. Also not having clean air affects the ecosystem, it does not allow birds to be able to fly since the smog fills their lungs, and the wildlife does not thrive in a polluted environment. In order to combat the amount of air pollution in Medellín, Colombia the Program for the Protection and Control of the Air Quality from the Metropolitan Area of the Aburrá Valley implemented a plan which was the building blocks for creating the first air quality management plan. Some of the key challenges is trying to get everyone in the community to be on board with combating pollution/ trying to get everyone to understand what air pollution actually is and what the source is.
The key themes I hope to cover would be ways to combat air pollution, how the air pollution got so bad and what were the major contributors, if the community is willing to change their lifestyles to help combat air pollution.
